Project Description:

The applicant proposes to modify their mining permit and water withdrawal permit at an existing wollastonite mine. The modification would allow for the extraction of minerals underground, expanding the life of mine by 33.5 acres, no expansion of the surface mining is proposed. The modification would allow for the addition of underground mining activities 24 hours/ day, and underground blasting Monday - Friday 9 am to 6:30 pm. The operating hours for above ground activities would remain the same as currently permitted. No changes to quantity of material, processing methods, or truck trips are proposed. The water withdrawal permit would be modified to add an additional pump to dewater the underground workings. This application is also under review by the Adirondack Park Agency 2023-0256.

State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) Determination:

Project is not subject to SEQR because it is a Type II action.

SEQR Lead Agency: None Designated

State Historic Preservation Act (SHPA) Determination:

Evaluation using a Structural-Archaeological Assessment Form or other information has concluded that the proposed activity will not impact registered, eligible or inventoried archaeological sites or historic structures.

Coastal Management:

This project is not located in a Coastal Management area and is not subject to the Waterfront Revitalization and Coastal Resources Act.

DEC Commissioner Policy 29, Environmental Justice and Permitting (CP-29)

It has been determined that the proposed action is not subject to CP-29.

Opportunity for Public Comment:

Comments on this project must be submitted in writing to the Contact Person no later than Dec 20, 2024.
