WHO: UH Mānoa Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge and UH panelists Noenoe Silva, Noah Dolim, Alexander Mawyer and Dean Saranillio

WHAT: A panel discussion will explore the United States' imperial actions in Oceania, focusing on events from 1898 and their lasting impact on Hawaiʻi and other Pacific nations. The panel will address the historical context of U.S. expansion into Hawaiʻi, the Philippines, and other island nations, examining the effects on these communities and discussing the importance of civic education in fostering an informed and empowered society.

WHEN: Friday, September 6, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

WHERE: King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center, 417 S. King St, Honolulu, HI (Registration required), event will also be live streamed by ʻŌiwi TV

WHY: This panel is part of Hawaiian History Month, a month-long celebration dedicated to honoring Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawaiʻi, and highlighting the rich cultural heritage and language of the Hawaiian people.

Happening tonight, UH Mānoa's Hawaiian studies department will host a panel discussion examining the lasting impact of historical events from 1898, which marked the annexation of Hawaiʻi by the United States. UH faculty will focus on the long-lasting impacts the U.S. expansion also had on communities in the Philippines, and other island nations.
