Suspect Arrested for Setting a Fire in Roxbury

At about 2:12 AM, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, officers assigned to District C-6 (South Boston) arrested Santos Mateo-Cruz, 32, of Boston, for multiple arson charges.

An officer was approached by a female caller in the area of 255 Southampton Street. The officer was advised that a male suspect was lighting a fire behind her. The officer immediately observed a fire and the suspect was pouring gasoline onto the sidewalk near the fence. The officer also observed the suspect to be holding a lighter in his hand.

The officer quickly placed the suspect into handcuffs, and the Boston Fire Department was requested for assistance. Once the flame began to subside, officers could see a distinct charring mark to be present.

Mateo-Cruz was placed under arrest and charged with Negligent Use of Fire, Attempted Arson of a Dwelling, Defacing/Damaging Property, and Receiving Stolen Property. He is expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
