ULAANBAATAR COMPLETES 'SOLID WASTE MODERNISATION PROJECT' WITH EBRD AND THE EU SUPPORT

ULAANBAATAR COMPLETES "SOLID WASTE MODERNISATION PROJECT" WITH EBRD AND THE EU SUPPORT

With the financing fromthe European Bank for Reconstruction and Development ("EBRD") and grant from the European Union, the Municipality of Ulaanbaatar has successfully completed the constructionworks of "Ulaanbaatar solid waste modernisation project". Thisproject alignswith the long-term development policy of Mongolia "Vision 2050" as well as the UlaanbaatarCity'slong-term and medium-term development policy.

With the increase in population, production, and services, Ulaanbaatar city has witnessed rapid construction of new buildings and structure, resulting in increaseddust andelevated air, water and soil pollution. This has negativelyimpacted the health and safety of the citizens, with household and construction waste being the major contributor to the pollution.

The project has been implemented in the 12th khoroo of Khan-uul district next to the Moringiin davaa landfill site. Within the framework of the project, new sanitary landfill with a capacity of 8.5 million tons of waste without any adverse effect to the environment has been constructed, as well as recycling plant with capacity of 170 thousand tons of construction and demolition waste per annum. In addition, 29 units of heavy-duty machinery and spare parts have been provided, including landfill compactor, crawler excavators, demolition excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, water trucks, and dump trucks, which are indispensable for the operations of landfill and Construction and demolition waste recycling plant.

Mr. Nyambaatar, the Governor of the Capital City and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar stated during the opening ceremony that "With completion of this project, conditions now have been established to alleviate the pressure on Ulaanbaatar's centralized landfills, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, close and rehabilitate outdated landfills, and create stable employment opportunities".

Hannes A. Takacs, EBRD Head of Mongolia, expressed that "The completion of a highly anticipated infrastructure project, supported by the EBRD, the EU and governments of Korea and Japan, will provide major environmental benefits for almost 1.7 million people living in Ulaanbaatar. Built in accordance with the national and EU environmental regulations it will allow the country's largest municipality to safely dispose of solid waste for another decade".

Ms Ina Marciulionyte, Ambassador of the European Union to Mongolia, stated"Today, we are not only inaugurating a new facility; we are celebrating a new chapter for Ulaanbaatar. The completion of this sanitary landfill and the accompanying recycling plant signifies a substantial step forward for the city in its waste management capabilities. The machinery and infrastructure will serve the people of Ulaanbaatar for years to come, ensuring that waste is handled in a more efficient, environmentally friendly manner."

Following the completion of this project, citizens of Ulaanbaatar now have a modern landfill facility that meets hygiene requirements, which will reduce air and soil pollution in city, creating healthy and safe living environment to live.
