Recent spike in guns stolen from vehicles

Thefts from vehicles are one of the most common crimes in our area. Anytime vehicles are left unattended for extended periods of time, local thieves view it as a favorable opportunity.

During this month alone, there have been eight vehicles broken into with firearms stolen. These incidents have happened all over the city and involve suspects who broke windows of vehicles to steal valuables, including firearms. These stolen firearms often exchange hands and can be used to commit violent crimes in our community.

In addition to remembering to store your firearms safely, a reminder that in 2021, Oregon's Senate Bill 554 was enacted. A section of that law requires gun owners to secure their weapons in a locked container or gun room (with a trigger/cable lock) when not being carried on their person. You are also required to report the theft as soon as possible or within 72 hours.

Please don't let criminals get their hands on your firearms. Store them safely.

We want to encourage people to think about crime prevention as they plan their day.

By incorporating the tips below, you can deter criminals and reduce the possibility of an unwanted surprise when returning to your vehicle.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE TIPS:

  • If you are carrying a firearm, don't leave it behind. Please keep it secured in a locked container when you are not carrying it on your person. A vehicle, a console, or glove box is not considered a locked container..
  • Don't leave anything visible inside the vehicle! They will break into a vehicle for even visible pocket change and once they rummage through hiding spots, can easily find an unsecured weapon.
  • Don't park and then put something in your vehicle's trunk and then walk away from the vehicle. If someone saw you put it in, they can usually access your trunk by breaking into your vehicle and accessing the trunk release. Instead, put the item in the trunk before arriving at your location. This is especially important at hiking/running locations, sporting events and shopping malls.
  • Secure vehicles by rolling up the windows and locking doors (even on a hot day - it is better to take a few minutes to air out a hot car than to discover a theft)
  • If you happen to observe suspicious activity, or any criminal behavior, please contact police at the earliest convenience.
