Mayor Broome Breaks Ground on MOVEBR South Sherwood Forest Boulevard Multi-Use Path Project

BATON ROUGE, LA - October 18, 2024 - Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome held a groundbreaking ceremony this morning for the latest MOVEBR project aimed at improving mobility and accessibility in East Baton Rouge Parish. The $2.5 million multi-use path project will enhance transportation options for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists along South Sherwood Forest Boulevard from South Harrell's Ferry Road through the I-12 interchange to Old Hammond Highway.

The project will boost connectivity on both sides of I-12, with additional improvements including signal upgrades for the I-12 eastbound exit ramp. Enhanced pedestrian crossings are also part of the plan at key intersections along Sherwood Forest Boulevard, including South Harrell's Ferry Road, I-12 ramp terminals, North Harrell's Ferry Road, and Old Hammond Highway.

"This project is a testament to our commitment to improving mobility and safety throughout Baton Rouge," said Mayor Broome. "Not only does it connect commercial and residential areas more efficiently, but it also increases ADA access, ensuring our infrastructure works for all of our residents."

The new multi-use path will range from 5 to 10 feet in width, providing expanded access for pedestrians and cyclists. Scheduled for completion by summer, weather permitting, the project is a significant step toward enhancing one of Baton Rouge's key commercial corridors.

The design consultants for the project are GWS and Gresham Smith, with LA Contracting Enterprise serving as the contractor. The project is made possible through funding from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development's (DOTD) safety program.

This initiative is part of the larger MOVEBR community enhancement efforts aimed at improving infrastructure and quality of life throughout East Baton Rouge Parish.
