The Elgin Fire Department responded to a fire at the "Tent City" homeless encampment near State and Wing Streets at 11:49 p.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames near the river.
When crews reached the scene, they discovered three structures fully engulfed. The fire was contained to the three structures and extinguished within 30 minutes. During a search of the structures, the remains of a dog were found near one of the affected areas.
Responding crews faced challenges due to the long hose stretch of over 500 feet, below-freezing temperatures, and delays required to ensure Metra trains in the area were stopped for safety.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but initial findings suggest it was accidental in nature. There were no injuries to any residents or firefighters.
