The City of Killeen has initiated a Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Survey to identify and address issues in the wastewater system. This initiative is part of a 10-year project, with approximately 10% of the wastewater lines evaluated each year.
Initial smoke testing will begin on Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the area north of Veterans Memorial Boulevard to Fort Cavazos, between Fort Hood Street and College Street. This phase is expected to last up to three months, weather permitting.
What is Smoke Testing?
Smoke testing involves introducing non-toxic smoke into the sanitary sewer system to identify deficiencies. During testing, residents may see smoke escaping from the ground or smoke vents on homes.

In rare cases, smoke may enter a home through seldom-used drain pipes. Residents are encouraged to run water into such drains before the test. If smoke enters a home through other means, it likely indicates plumbing issues, which should be addressed by a licensed plumber.

As the testing crew moves to new areas, updates will be provided regarding the current testing zones. Over the next 10 years, different areas of the city will undergo testing, and residents will be notified before testing begins in their area.
