IAM Local 1943 Members Unite to Support Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts

In a heartfelt show of solidarity and community spirit, IAM Local 1943 members working at Cleveland-Cliffs steel mill in Middletown, Ohio, successfully organized a donation drive to support those affected by Hurricane Helene. This initiative, which spanned over two weeks, was driven by the dedication and compassion of union members who recognized the urgent need to help those facing the devastating impacts of the hurricane.

IAM Local 1943 members Mike Campbell, Karen Back, Mike Fink and Gregg Azbill led the charge, coordinating collection stations at the mill's various entrances. Their tireless efforts rallied the support of fellow union members, creating an outpouring of generosity that greatly exceeded expectations. Through this initiative, IAM Local 1943 members raised funds for essential items, including toiletries, bottled water, non-perishable food, and other critical supplies.

The collected items were shipped to a local non-profit organization, with assistance from IAM Local member Azbill, ensuring that the contributions reached those in need in the affected regions of North Carolina and Tennessee.

"We strive to stay informed about the needs of our community," said IAM Local 1943 President and Directing Business Representative Shawn Coffey. "Members of IAM Local 1943 consistently consider how we can support those in need and how, as an organization and as union members, we can contribute to the greater good."

The union's commitment to community involvement extends beyond the current relief efforts. IAM Local 1943 has a longstanding history of engagement and support for local initiatives that enhance the welfare of its community members.

"The IAM is proud to stand with our neighbors during difficult times," said IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan. "Standing by our neighbors in times of crisis is not just a duty, it's part of our identity as union members."

IAM Local 1943 represents more than 2,000 hourly workers at Cleveland-Cliffs steel mill involved in steel operation with carbon steel melting, casting, hot- and cold-rolling, and finishing operations.
