NAIDOC Week celebrated at Civmec

Yesterday, Civmec hosted a special NAIDOC Week 2024 event attended by local elders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees, suppliers and friends, colleagues, clients, and state and local government representatives.

The event, held in the Civmec assembly hall, was an opportunity to come together, celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as learn more about the significance of the land on which Civmec operates.

The theme for NAIDOC Week 2024 was "Keep the fire burning!".

Whadjuk Noongar Elder Steven Jacobs delivered a Welcome to Country, while Civmec Senior HSE Advisor Graeme Harwood, as the MC, set the scene for the centrepiece of the event - a video animation of the Walyalup Dreamtime Story. The powerful story, featuring Yondock, the Waugal, Woorriji, and Dwert, remains a vital part of the cultural tapestry of the Whadjuk people.

The story also holds special significance at Civmec, as it describes how Derbal Nara (Cockburn Sound), the location of the Henderson facility, and the chain of islands from Meeandip (Garden Island) to Wadjemup (Rottnest Island), were formed.
