House Unanimously Passes Huizenga-led Effort to Rename Battle Creek Post Office in Honor of Sojourner Truth

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to rename the Battle Creek Post Office after abolitionist and civil rights leader Sojourner Truth. The decision to rename the post office is supported by the descendants of Sojourner Truth as well as local organizations such as Kellogg Community College and Battle Creek Unlimited.

In May, Huizenga introduced legislation to rename the post office located at 90 McCamly Street South in Battle Creek to the Sojourner Truth Post Office. Every Michigan member of the U.S. House of Representatives cosponsored H.R. 8405 when it was originally introduced. The legislation passed today was the Senate version of the Huizenga bill that was introduced by Senator Gary Peters (D-MI). The legislation renaming the Battle Creek Post Office now heads to the President's desk to be signed into law.

"The Sojourner Truth Post Office will stand in Battle Creek as a symbol of not only Sojourner Truth and her historic efforts, but also the incredible role the Greater Battle Creek Community played in the abolition movement and our nation's history."
