New temporary accommodation officially opened

Newark and Sherwood District Council has officially opened its new temporary accommodation, Alexander Lodge and marked the opening with a family-fun activity day for the residents and local community.

Alexander Lodge provides shelter and support for residents who find themselves at the threat of becoming homeless. The building is made up of self-contained accommodation that is flexible to meet the bedroom needs of the residents, with interlocking rooms which can be furnished and supplied with secure storage, providing a safe, warm and comfortable space for residents. Each property has its own private outdoor space and a play area for children with a caretaker on site ensuring the building is well looked after and stays in great shape.

The team located at the site, in partnership with local colleges, will also be launching a wider support package to help with key skills such as budgeting, health and well-being, home safety and practical skills from the Autumn.

To mark the official opening the District Council organised a family-friendly summer activity day. Families currently housed at Alexander Lodge and neighbours in the area were invited to enjoy a day of activities including art with the National Civil War Centre's Open Doors resident artist, face painting, outdoor games, food and refreshments. They also had the opportunity to speak to partner agencies including Citizens Advice and Inspire - Culture, Learning and Libraries to discuss advice and support.

Councillor Lee Brazier, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Newark and Sherwood District Council who officially opened the site, said: "It was an absolute pleasure to attend the Summer Activity Day at Alexander Lodge and officially open the facility.

"Alexander Lodge will enable the District Council to deliver a strong homelessness support service, with a focus on helping residents achieve long-term tenancy success. The District Council remains absolutely committed to helping our residents who find themselves at the threat of homelessness and this brilliant new facility will enable us to make sure they are in safe, modern facilities whilst we help them get back on their feet."
