Brownley Statement on House Passage of Continuing Resolution to Avert Government Shutdown

Washington, DC - Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) issued the following statement following House passage of H.R. 9747, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2025. This funding bill, commonly referred to as a Continuing Resolution (CR), puts Congress on a path to avert a government shutdown by authorizing continued discretionary funding over the course of the next three months.

"Extreme MAGA Republicans and their leader, former President Trump, have repeatedly threatened to shut down the government and to hold our economy and the American people hostage over their insistence on implementing the radical policies laid out in Trump's Project 2025," said Congresswoman Brownley.

"We all know a government shutdown would not only have a devastating economic impact, but it would hinder our military readiness, weaken our national security, deprive veterans of benefits they have earned, prohibit seniors from enrolling in Social Security, and jeopardize the critical services and programs that American families rely on.

"House Democrats rejected the harmful and dangerous efforts by the extreme wing of the Republican Party to add poison pill riders on budget bills. The continuing resolution that emerged through bicameral, bipartisan negotiations, is not perfect, but it represents a reasonable compromise.

"This funding bill reflects House Democrats' commitment to putting people over politics by curbing MAGA extremism and moving the nation forward, and that is why I voted for its passage. I trust that the Senate and the President will act swiftly so that we can keep the federal government open and continue to serve the American people."
