EURO quarter-finals over: One BVB player still in hunt for title

Following the elimination of the German team on Friday evening and a bitter end to the tournament for the Borussia trio of Nico Schlotterbeck, Niclas Füllkrug and Emre Can, two more BVB players had to pack their EURO suitcases on Saturday. The only remaining Black & Yellow is Donyell Malen, who will return to Dortmund for the semi-final.

The only remaining Black & Yellow is Donyell Malen, who will return to Dortmund for the semi-final.

Similarly to the previous games, Gregor Kobel was only a spectator for Switzerland's quarter-final match against England. The game in Düsseldorf (1-1 after extra-time) had to be settled by a penalty shootout. Since former Dortmund player Manuel Akanji missed the first spot-kick for Switzerland and Yann Sommer in the Swiss goal could not subsequently save any of the five England penalties, the country's strong run came to an end in the North Rhine-Westphalian capital.

The same fate befell the Türkiye national team, who lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in the final quarter-final in Berlin despite taking a 1-0 lead. BVB midfielder Salih Özcan was included in the starting line-up and produced a combative performance up until his substitution in the 77th minute. Donyell Malen, who had bagged a brace after coming on as a substitute against Romania in the previous round, did not feature for the Netherlands on Saturday evening.

However, Malen is the only one of initially seven Borussia players still at the EURO and is likely to be particularly looking forward to the semi-final. Because 'Donny' and his 'Oranje' will be heading to Dortmund for their last-four tie, where the opponents next Wednesday will be England (kick-off 21:00 CEST).
