Economist to forecast California’s future fortunes during annual conference keynote address

Dr. Christopher Thornberg, who predicted the subprime mortgage market crash, is Thursday's keynote speaker

By Cal Cities Education staff

Dr. Christopher Thornberg will provide a comprehensive look at California's economic future at the 2024 Annual Conference and Expo. Attendees will gain insight into key indicators driving the state and nation's economic fortunes, as well as leading risks, such as ideologically driven political dysfunction.

Thornberg is the founder of Beacon Economics, an independent research and consulting firm dedicated to delivering objective analyses. The firm first made a name for itself as the only major West Coast forecaster to predict the subprime mortgage crisis and ensuing global financial crisis. It also predicted the rapid "V" shaped recovery from the pandemic and subsequent surge in inflation.

Beacon Economics has become one of the most respected research organizations in California, working alongside private industry, public agencies, and nonprofits. Thornberg holds a doctorate in business economics from the Anderson School at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he later taught in the MBA program. He also served as a senior economist with the Anderson Forecast.

As a thought leader, Thornberg speaks in front of tens of thousands of people every year, urging audiences to ask the right economic questions before accepting pervasive social and political narratives.
