Lebanon’s Hunger Crisis Deepens

A Focus on Food Security

Lebanon is facing an unparalleled crisis, with economic collapse, political instability, and ongoing conflict combining to create a humanitarian emergency. Among the most pressing concerns is food security, as millions struggle to access basic necessities. The Lebanese lira has already lost 98% of its 2019 value and inflation has soared to nearly 269%. The cost of living has become unbearable for many, with the poverty rate jumping from 12% in 2012 to 44%. For years, we have been living in reverse.

The situation is further exacerbated by the intensifying war with Israel, leading to increased displacement and destruction in southern Lebanon. Over 100,000 people have been displaced, primarily from southern districts such as Bint Jbeil and Sour (Tyre). The war has severely impacted livelihoods, particularly in the agricultural sector with 72% of farmers in the South reporting a loss of income, which is vital to southern Lebanon's economy. The use of white phosphorus bombs and other forms of bombardment has destroyed vast areas of farmland, leading to significant losses in both crops and livestock.

Food Security Crisis

Amidst this turmoil, food security has emerged as a critical concern. The economic downturn and conflict-related disruptions have severely impacted food access across Lebanon. The situation is dire for many, especially in northern and eastern regions where food insecurity is highest. In these areas, the population faces acute shortages, with up to 37% experiencing severe food insecurity.

The overall food security situation in Lebanon is bleak, with approximately 1.26 million people projected to face crisis or worse levels of food insecurity from April to September 2024. The ongoing conflict has disrupted agricultural production and supply chains, leading to skyrocketing food prices and decreased availability of essential goods. Displaced families in southern Lebanon have struggled to secure adequate food rations, often receiving only a fraction of their needs over extended periods.

The North: Rising Needs and Challenges

In northern Lebanon, the impact of these crises is especially pronounced. The region, traditionally less affected by conflicts compared to the south, has been grappling since before 2019 with severe food insecurity. The economic downturn and displacement have put additional pressure on local resources and infrastructure. Many displaced families from the south are expected to move north if the situation deteriorates further, adding to the already significant strain on the northern regions.

Up to one in three households in northern regions report challenges in accessing food according to WFP, with many relying on less nutritious options. Child malnutrition is a concern, particularly in areas like Akkar, where over 40% of children under five are at risk of malnutrition according to UNICEF, and with one in four children across Lebanon suffering from malnutrition.

Local communities, already stretched thin, are facing significant strain as they attempt to accommodate the growing number of displaced families from the south. The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive support and intervention. The potential influx of displaced individuals adds urgency to addressing the food security crisis and supporting local communities to handle the increased demand on their already strained resources.
