The planning process for the Napa RiverLine project, an ambitious initiative to transform our riverfront into a vibrant environmental and economic hub, is underway. On September 5, approximately 30 stakeholders - including representatives from Friends of the Napa River, Vine Trail and Napa Valley Transportation Authority along with City officials and staff - came together to begin shaping this transformative vision during the project's kickoff meeting at CIA Copia.
The RiverLine represents a pivotal opportunity to enhance access to and enjoyment of the Napa River while supporting crucial habitat preservation. Envisioned as a scenic, water-oriented walkway, the project aims to deliver environmental, recreational, social, historic and economic benefits to both our community and the broader region. As Napa faces increasing growth pressures and climate challenges, the RiverLine exemplifies responsible stewardship, aligning with the Friends of the Napa River's "Living River" objectives in the effort to reimagine the critical role of the Napa River in our community's future.
The project's roots trace back to a 2018 Urban Land Institute study that identified the potential to transform our underutilized riverfront into a dynamic economic hub. Thanks to previous flood mitigation efforts, including the Oxbow River Bypass and floodwall improvements, we're now positioned to move forward with this transformative project. The City's successful acquisition of a U.S. Economic Development Administration grant is funding the Napa River Economic Resilience Strategic Plan, which provides the foundation and regulatory framework for the RiverLine concept.
Currently, our consulting team is working with stakeholders to conduct an extensive analysis and planning process. This involves reviewing existing plans and policies, analyzing current riverfront conditions and studying successful case studies from similar projects. This information will be used to develop initial design concepts and create strategic economic initiatives that support the project.
Looking ahead, we are preparing for an exciting public open house in January 2025. This event will showcase initial designs from SWA Group, a collective of landscape architects, and provide an opportunity for community members to engage directly with the project's vision. Attendees will be able to view case studies and design concepts to stimulate discussion and gather community input.
The success of the RiverLine depends on robust collaboration among numerous stakeholders, including both public and private entities. This partnership approach ensures the project's design, accessibility, programming and long-term sustainability will truly serve our community's needs. Community input is a critical component of this project - we encourage all community members to provide input through the Envisioning the Napa Riverline Survey #1.
As we advance this exciting initiative, we remain committed to ensuring the RiverLine reflects Napa's distinct character while creating a sustainable, vibrant riverfront for generations to come. Sign up for project updates and check the project website for the latest information.
