On September 3, 2024, at approximately 11:15 p.m., New York State Police at Binghamton responded to a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 near mile marker 31.5 in the town of Lisle. An investigation at the scene determined that a tractor trailer was traveling south on I-81 when it went off the roadway. The driver of the tractor trailer, Singh Simran, age 28 of Calgary, Alberta for an unknown reason, went off the roadway into the grassy median. Simran attempted to bring the tractor trailer back into the roadway but overturned, blocking both southbound lanes of travel. A Mercedes Benz, operated 19-year old Danial Kirmani was traveling south on I-81 when he attempted to avoid the tractor trailer but was unable to and struck the cab of the tractor trailer. A second tractor trailer operated by Mykola Khudyk, age 67 of LaSalle, Quebec was also traveling south on I-81 when the operator was unable to avoid the first tractor trailer and collided with the trailer portion of the first tractor trailer. The drivers of the tractor trailers were not injured, the driver of the Mercedes was transported to Wilson Hospital for minor injuries.

On September 4, 2024, at approximately 12:23 a.m., New York State Police at Homer responded to a crash involving two tractor trailers on Interstate 81 south near mile marker 40.3 in the town of Marathon. An investigation at the scene revealed that one tractor trailer, driven by Nicholas Espino, age 31 of Bronx, NY was traveling south on I-81 when he failed to observe a second tractor trailer slowing down and subsequently rear ended the second tractor trailer driven by Gregory S. Wilson, age 34 of Mexico, NY. No injuries were reported.

The portion of I-81 from Marathon to Lisle was closed for several hours due to the dense fog and the proximity of the two crashes. The roadway was reopened at approximately 8:30 a.m.
