Rep. Munira Seeks Clarity on Voter Registration Cancellations Amid Rising Naturalization Rates

COLUMBUS - Rep. Munira Abdullahi (D-Columbus) has called on Secretary of State Frank LaRose to provide clarity on the recent cancellations of voter registrations for individuals deemed non-citizens by his office. This request follows the approval of 16,010 naturalization applications in Ohio during the 2023 fiscal year, highlighting a significant influx of new American voters.

"We must ensure that every eligible voter, including our newly naturalized citizens, is not unfairly disenfranchised," said Rep. Munira. "It is crucial that we understand the processes used to verify voter eligibility and prevent errors. The right to vote is fundamental, and it is our responsibility to protect it diligently."

Rep. Munira's letter to Secretary LaRose seeks detailed information on the procedures used to cross-check citizenship status, including the role of the SAVE database, the handling of voter interactions with the BMV, and the processes for contesting wrongful removals from voter rolls.

Rep. Munira has set a deadline for receiving a response by the end of business on September 17, 2024, to protect voter rights and ensure fair participation in upcoming elections.
