SMPTE Spotlight: Trupti Patel

Broadcasting is a team effort. It takes a village to produce great shows, and the leader of said village needs to be confident, organized, and knowledgeable. Trupti is one of those great leaders. With more than 20 years of industry experience, Trupti has worked with some of the most talented people in the media tech industry, and she's not done yet.

CURRENT POSITION: Head of Program Management, TBS

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS: ANZ SMPTE Section Member ANZ RISE (WiB) Board Member PMP certified

DEGREES:Bachelor in Architecture

"Originally from India, I graduated from Pune University with a bachelor's in architecture," said Trupti. "Later, I received a Diploma in E-Commerce and Multimedia from Sydney before becoming a Certified Scrum Master via the Scrum Alliance in 2012. I transitioned to Telstra Broadcasting Service (TBS) in 2015 after my time as a senior program manager at Telstra and relocated their facility from MLC to Pitt St."

Trupti currently runs the TBS Program Management Office, where she oversees a team of project/program managers and business analysts to deliver complex projects. She also manages TBS's operational excellence program, which optimizes broadcasting delivery. She's responsible for many of TBS's most innovative projects.

"I delivered the relocation project for TBS," said Trupti. "As part of an acquisition, we needed to build a new facility, migrate 400+ live services, and integrate the team within Telstra. It was my first M & A project. Not knowing anything about broadcasting, I had to have a steep learning curve. My highlight was how all the teams collaborated, took accountability, and migrated all the services without a single on-air outage. Though delivering complex projects drives me professionally, I value the people and teams I work with most."

Trupti is also an active member of SMPTE. She's a board member of the Australia and New Zealand Section and even helped plan this year's METexpo. "As part of this event, I equally pushed myself to be on a panel, host a fireside chat, and produce a few conferences," said Trupti when asked about her role at METexpo. "The ability to network and make new connections grew and the ability to influence young minds was the proudest moment."

Trupti also has high hopes for the future. Her daughter was in high school when she joined the Australia and New Zealand Section. These two factors inspired her to do more outreach to students to get more people interested in the media technology industry. "The broadcast industry should campaign at schools to show young minds what opportunities await them. Reconnecting with the Education Corner and inviting TAFE to METexpo were our first steps towards that journey."

Trupti Patel has had an amazing career. During her time off, she enjoys travel and is an avid foodie. These extracurriculars are a welcome departure from her many leadership roles, though she loves her work. People become leaders because they love what they do. They have a passion for their work, and Trupti Patel has that passion in spades. The entire SMPTE community looks forward to what she has in store for the future.
