Animal Services Continue with the City of Waco

Published on August 26, 2024

On Friday, August 23, the City of Waco and the Humane Society of Central Texas (HSCTX) mutually decided to sign an agreement to terminate the Animal Shelter Services Agreement on September 6, 2024. Both parties remain committed to saving the lives of animals in our community.

The City has contracted with the Humane Society of Central Texas since 2012 to provide adoption, foster, rescue, and volunteer coordination at the Waco Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, recent financial negotiations were not able to be resolved and a joint decision was made to terminate the agreement. The termination agreement establishes that HSCTX has until September 6, 2024 to leave the Animal Shelter campus, which allows a two-week transition period.

The City of Waco is deeply committed to ensuring this transition is handled smoothly with the continued safety and welfare of the animals in our care remaining our top priority. With two veterinarians on staff, we continue to be dedicated to the highest standard of care for the animals on our campus and in foster care.

Preparations are already underway to assume the on-site responsibilities previously managed by the HSCTX, including adoptions, rescue, and foster opportunities. Staff members are being added to our current hard-working staff. We also welcome the community to continue to support our regional shelter. The goal will always be getting animals out alive, healthy, and into forever homes.

Bradley Ford, City Manager, stated, "We are grateful for the partnership maintained with the Humane Society of Central Texas over the years and the many animals' lives saved in collaboration with our Animal Services staff. We are taking every necessary step to ensure a smooth transition and to uphold our commitment to animal welfare for our community and shelter partners. All services, including adoption, fostering, and volunteering, will continue at the same facility. I look forward to supporting the Humane Society of Central Texas in their future animal welfare role in the community."

Additional information regarding the transition will be provided as it becomes available.
