Congressman Johnson’s Statement In Response To Supreme Court’s Decision Overturning Chevron Deference

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In response to the Supreme Court's decision today in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless v. Department of Commerce, which overturned the decades-old precedent of deference toward federal agency decision making that the Court announced in Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, House Judiciary Courts Subcommittee Ranking Member Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) released the following statement:

"With this ruling, polluters have been given free rein to contaminate our air and water with impunity. By overturning Chevron deference, the Supreme Court has become the ultimate rule maker when it comes to the environment, public health, workers' rights, and so much more. The decades of dark money that corporations poured into capturing our Supreme Court has clearly paid off for them. The unelected and unaccountable Supreme Court has now seized power away from the Legislative Branch and the Executive Branch, so that they can remake the political and economic system into one where the haves can dominate the have-nots, where it is a dog-eat-dog world and only the strong survive. Make no mistake: this decision is a gift to corporations and a loss for everyday Americans. We need Court Reform Now so government can work on behalf of the people, not just the rich and powerful."
