Peterson named as a top critical access hospital CEO to know

CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. - Becker's Hospital Review has named Sanford Chamberlain and Pierre's Erica Peterson to the 2024 edition of its "90 critical access hospital CEOs to know."

This list honors presidents and chief executive officers of critical access hospitals devoted to high care quality, patient safety and financial stability. These leaders bring crucial care services to their organizations, recruit top physicians, and join forces with larger hospitals and health systems that can provide additional resources. The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team accepted nominations for this list and curated it to highlight the exceptional work of chief executive officers from critical access hospitals across the nation.

Peterson serves as the chief executive officer at Sanford Chamberlain Medical Center and Sanford Pierre Clinic, which provide health care services to residents and locals from the surrounding rural areas. Prior to her role as administrator, Peterson held the chief financial officer position with Sanford Chamberlain for seven years and was responsible for Medicare and Medicaid cost reports, statistical and financial analysis, and multi-departmental budgeting for the organization.

In addition to her role with Sanford, Peterson is a well-known and trusted member of her community, involved in local education and bringing important well-being programs to schools. She is an active board member of the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations and Stockyards Ag Experience. She also serves as the Sanford liaison to Indian Health Services, which operates on Native American reservations. Peterson has been instrumental in helping shape public policy around rural health care in the state, testifying on behalf of Sanford Health at the South Dakota State Legislature.
