DCHA Residents Team Up With Casey Trees to Care for Neighborhood Canopy

August 5, 2024 4:37 PM

Residents of Highland Dwellings - with the help of Casey Trees - spent Saturday, July 27 working together to mulch, weed and water their neighborhood trees.

DCHA partnered with Casey Trees to help care for vulnerable trees in the community and bolster the neighborhood's growing tree canopy. Casey Trees provided all the necessary tools and supplies to make the event possible.

The enriching event was an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and invest in the community while getting to know neighbors. Despite the heat, residents and volunteers were able to mulch all 80 trees throughout the Highland Dwellings community. Some residents shared how working with nature helps them feel grounded.

Since 2001, the nonprofit has aimed to restore and protect Washington DC's tree canopy. Since then, they have planted more than 30,000 trees and have set a goal to attain 40% canopy in the city by 2032.
