Nanaimo Fire Rescue participating in Fire Prevention Week

The 2024 theme is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™"

NEWS RELEASE - Distributed October 3, 2024 11:45 AM

Summary

The City of Nanaimo Fire Rescue department is participating in Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 6-12, 2024. This year's campaign, "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!TM", will educate about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue has some important tips about smoke alarms:

  • Install smoke alarms outside each bedroom and sleeping area, and on every level of the house.
  • Make sure all smoke alarms work by testing them every month and replacing 9-volt batteries at least once a year or according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Practice a home fire escape plan so everyone in the home knows what to do when the smoke alarm sounds.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years or according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Replace broken or expired smoke alarms and drop them off for free at over 200 recycling locations across BC. Check the What Goes Where tool in the Nanaimo Recycles app for locations.

In addition to Fire Prevention Week, Nanaimo Fire Rescue is hosting an open house on Oct. 23, 2024 at 666 Fitzwilliam Street. For more information visit the Fire and Rescue page on www.nanaimo.ca.

Quotes

"Smoke alarms save lives. When you hear a smoke alarm, you may have less than 2 minutes to get everyone outside and to safety. This is why it is so important to not only make sure your home is equipped with smoke alarms, but to make sure they are working."
