Elgin, IL - The City of Elgin has announced the selection of a live tree as the centerpiece for its annual holiday tree lighting ceremony. The 33-foot Blue Spruce, donated by Bryan and Debby McMahan of West Dundee, will be placed in the newly revitalized DuPage Court in downtown Elgin.
The tree will be removed from the McMahan residence at 1058 Chateau Bluff Lane, West Dundee, on Friday, Nov. 22. and be transported to 40 DuPage Court in Elgin, where it will be installed by crane. To accommodate the installation, Grove Avenue will be closed to traffic from East Chicago Street to Fulton Street from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
The holiday tree lighting ceremony, marking the start of the holiday season, is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 30, from 5 to 6 p.m. where Mayor David Kaptain, members of City Council, and Santa will turn on the holiday tree lights. The tree will be illuminated through early January 2025.
Schedule for Friday, Nov. 22:
As part of Elgin's commitment to sustainability, and after the holiday season, the tree will be cut down to a manageable size and taken by the Land Management / Forestry staff to Lords Park Zoo for where it will be used as natural vegetation for the animals, a perching base and for composting to enrich the soil.
