EU Ambassador Toivo Klaar to Visit Fergana Region on 15-16 October

Tashkent, 11 October 2024 - The European Union Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Mr. Toivo Klaar, will visit the Fergana region on the 15th and 16th of October to review the progress of an EU-funded project being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme. The purpose of the project is to promote innovation within Uzbekistan's agricultural sector, with a special focus on supporting smallholder farmers. In partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Uzbek research institutes, the project seeks to provide these farmers with the knowledge and financial support needed to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change while developing sustainable and economically viable farming practices.

During his first two-day visit to the region, Ambassador Klaar will engage with farmers, researchers, and key stakeholders in the districts of Kuva, Oltiarik, Dangara, and Besharik, where the EU-funded project has successfully introduced several agricultural innovations. These efforts include the introduction of drought-resistant cotton and mungbean varieties, the implementation of solar-powered drip irrigation systems, and the promotion of sustainable fish farming practices.

The European Union and Uzbekistan celebrate 30 years of partnership this year and have built a strong political and economic relationship. The EU also provides financial assistance to Uzbekistan, primarily topromoteeconomic development,effective governance,digital transformation,digital and green growth, development of sustainable agriculture and thefood sector.
