Ithaca College Presents "States of Mind: An Evening of Dance"

Three new works explore phases of relationships through movement.

The Ithaca College School of Music, Theatre, and Dance continues its 2024-25 theatre production season with "States of Mind: An Evening of Dance," premiering three works that explore different phases of relationships through movement choreographed by the school's full-time dance faculty: Amy Walker O'Brien, Daniel Gwirtzman, and Aimee Rials.

"States of Mind: An Evening of Dance" will be presented in Hoerner Theatre and runs select dates between Tuesday, December 3, and Sunday, December 8.

A talkback with the cast will be held after the 2 p.m. performance on Saturday, December 7.

The production features three dance pieces:

  • "Still(ness)" explores how we can reclaim our time and space in a world that often feels overwhelming. It is a reminder that amidst the rush, there is value in pausing, reflecting, and simply being. Despite being more connected than ever through social media and technology, we may feel a deeper sense of isolation. By embracing moments of stillness, we may find peace and connection.
  • "Flashpoint" explores the yin and yang of relationships, the push and pull of harmony and strife within our lives, how moments can shift on a dime and ignite into conflict, and the lines separating intimacy from violence. Pedestrian movement toggles with a virtuosic vocabulary. These flashpoints are suggestive not only of interpersonal relationships but also as a metaphor for the incivilities and dramas within the larger society.
  • In "re:collection," memory and shifting perceptions of experience are explored. Using individual, intricate movement, the dancers stitch the choreography together as memory is collectively shared and formed piece by piece, constantly evolving, and changed by the influence of each dancer. Memory is elusive yet is at its clearest when all perspectives are heard.
