VIDEO: Eighth Street reopening turns into an Unblocking party

Residents and downtown workers celebrated the reopening of Eighth Street while supporting surrounding businesses at an Unblocking Party, sponsored by Downtown Fort Worth Inc., on Thursday.

The street between Throckmorton and Houston streets had been closed since January, when an explosion rocked the nearby Sandman Hotel.

Revelers received free T-shirts and ice cream. A musical duo blasted tunes.

The businesses located on Eighth Street between Throckmorton and Houston streets, on the south side of the hotel, were impacted by the explosion and its aftermath. The City's Economic Development Department worked with the Local Development Corporation to provide more than $137,000 in grants to four small businesses located in the immediate vicinity of the explosion, to help supplement loss of revenue as cleanup efforts continued.
