24th Street to Close at Railroad Crossing Monday; Sidewalk To Be Connected on North Side

AMES, Iowa - All lanes of 24th Street will close at the 24th Street railroad crossing on Monday, Sept. 23, weather permitting, to remove and replace approaches to the railroad tracks. This closure is coordinated with the Union Pacific Railroad and is anticipated to last two weeks. Additionally, the railroad crossing will be extended north by Union Pacific Railroad to connect the sidewalk on the north side of the crossing.

A detour route will direct through traffic on 24th Street north to Bloomington Road and Grand Avenue. West of the railroad track, 24th Street will remain open and accessible from Stange Road. The south lane of 24th Street will stay closed during this time as stormwater cells are completed along the south side of 24th Street. The shared-use path along the south side of 24th Street will remain closed during this work and will reopen when the railroad approaches are completed.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time as delays are expected. The City of Ames has contracted with Con-Struct for the reconstruction of Stange Road and 24th Street. Stange Road was completed in 2023 while 24th Street has been reconstructed in three main stages. This is the final stage of this project.
