City of Salem Now Accepting Applications for Housing Rehabilitation Program

Mayor Dominick Pangallo announced today that the City of Salem is now accepting applications from Salem homeowners seeking assistance with home repairs and improvements through the City's Housing Rehabilitation Loan Program.

As part of the Mayor's goal to improve the quality and safety of Salem's housing, the City's Housing Rehabilitation Loan Program provides interest free loans that can be used to help correct code violations, remedy emergency situations, eliminate serious potential health, safety and lead hazards, and improve access for people with disabilities. Typical improvements include electrical and plumbing upgrades, window and door replacements, heating system repairs, roofing, and lead abatement, as well as disability modifications, such as bath alterations and permanent access ramps.

"Salem's Housing Rehabilitation Loan Program is one of our core housing programs, which has successfully assisted residents who would otherwise be unable to make the needed upgrades to their homes," said Mayor Pangallo. "I encourage every Salem homeowner who may be considering any of these projects to reach out and see if they are eligible for this important program."

The program is funded with funds provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. To qualify, owner-occupied households must meet income eligibility guidelines. Repayment options depend on the applicant's income and ability to pay. For lower income households, there are no monthly payments, and the loan is forgiven after 10 years (condo/single family) or 15 years (2-4 units).
