Hyuna Cho, a graduate student in POSTECH's integrated MS-PhD program at the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence (GSAI), has been named a recipient of the 2024 Google PhD Fellowship in Health and Bioscience. Under the guidance of Professor Won Hwa Kim in the Medical Information Processing (MIP) lab at POSTECH, Cho conducts research that develops novel artificial intelligence (AI) methods to address challenges in healthcare and medical science.
Her research includes medical image analysis and brain data modeling, fields where AI holds great potential. She has presented her findings at top-tier international conferences in computer science such as NeurIPS, ICML, and MICCAI, which focus on machine learning and medical imaging. Currently, Cho is developing AI models to predict future brain states in people at the risk of Alzheimer's Disease and to analyze how socioeconomic factors influence brain development in adolescent.
"This fellowship is an incredible opportunity to deepen my understanding of solving complex interdisciplinary problems and to collaborate with leading experts across various disciplines," Cho said. "I hope my research will not only advance technology in AI but also bring meaningful improvements to medical services and preventive healthcare."
The Google PhD Fellowship Program, established in 2009, recognizes and supports outstanding PhD students in computer science and related disciplines. Fellows receive financial assistance, mentorship, and internship opportunities, all aimed at cultivating the next generation of technology leaders. This year, 85 scholars were selected globally, including three from the Republic of Korea. Cho joins two other graduate students from Seoul National University and Korea University in representing the nation.
