SIUE Student Benjamin Moore to Perform Opera at Edwardsville's Holiday Concert

December 18, 2024, 1:30 PM

Edwardsville native and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville second-year vocal performance student Benjamin Moore will take the stage on Thursday, Dec. 19, as part of Edwardsville's opera signature holiday concert at the Wildey Theatre. This festive evening will feature Moore alongside professional artists, offering a unique opportunity to showcase local talent and the University's music program.

Moore's SIUE journey to the stage began with a passion for music that was nurtured through the University's dedicated faculty and programs. He credits SIUE for shaping his growth as a musician and introducing him to opera, a genre he had not considered before college.

"Before going into college, I didn't really think of opera as an option for me," Moore said. "But once I was told it was something I could do, it fit my voice type perfectly. I've been having a lot of fun with opera ever since."

Moore emphasized the critical role SIUE professors have played in his development, highlighting the mentorship he has received from Marc Schapman, DMA, professor of voice, director of SIUE Opera and Musical Theatre, and chair of the music department. Robert Mellon, lecturer in voice, is his current vocal instructor.

"Dr. Schapman introduced me to opera and taught me how to sing properly for it," Moore said. "And Professor Mellon has been tremendously helpful in improving my technique. Their guidance has shaped me into the singer I am today."

Moore is looking forward to performing in his hometown of Edwardsville before an audience at the historic Wildey Theatre that will include his friends and family. "I'm excited to perform alongside professionals in the field I'm going into," Moore said. "It's an honor to share the stage with them, and to perform for the city I've lived in for so much of my life makes it even more meaningful."

Moore sees the evening as a milestone in his career and a chance to connect with area audiences. "This is the biggest opportunity I've had so far. I'm excited to make my debut and potentially open some doors for my future."

Moore's passion for music and dedication reflect the strength of SIUE's music program, which offers aspiring musicians' valuable opportunities to perform both on and off campus. Moore recently starred as Melchior in SIUE's production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors," and he also performed with the Union Avenue opera Company in St. Louis, which was his first professional experience.

Looking ahead, Moore aspires to join a professional choir and perform in operas across the country. He hopes his story inspires other students to follow their passions, no matter the risks.

"At one point, I considered playing it safe and pursuing electrical work," Moore shared. "But it felt like I was pushing my passion aside. I decided to take the chance and couldn't be happier about it. You only get one life to do what you love."

For Moore, the Dec. 19 concert is not only a performance but a celebration of his hard work and the support he has received from SIUE's music faculty and programs.
