Unable to break 2-2 tie voting on October 7 and October 21 to appoint a candidate to fill the City Council vacancy, the Council directed staff to prepare a resolution calling for a Vote-by-Mail special election for consideration at its Nov. 18 meeting.
The County of San Diego Registrar of Voters estimates that administering a Vote-by-Mail special election will cost $150,000-$225,000.
If no Council action to fill the vacancy is taken by November 23, 2024, the seat could remain vacant until the regularly scheduled election in November 2026.
