Red Cross Continues to Help as Texans Seek Relief from Extreme Heat, Power Outages

The American Red Cross continues to provide shelter for people in southeast Texas who are still without power and air conditioning as dangerous high temperatures continue to smother the region.

More than a week after Hurricane Beryl slammed into Texas, almost 146,000 customers are still without power. The actual number of people without power is much higher as companies report impacted customers and not how many people actually live in affected homes. The situation is particularly dangerous for the elderly and people who rely on electric medical devices as power outages continue. Residents are urged to check on their loved ones and neighbors.

Mobile response teams are reaching hard hit communities with emergency supplies such as food and water and other critical support. Monday night, over 390 people stayed in 13Red Cross and partner shelters seeking relief from the heat and hurricane damage.

Hundreds of Red Crossers are working around the clock with Texas government officials and community partners to support those in need. They have provided some 11,000 hot meals, 1,000ready-to-eat meals and over 150 casesof water to communities that were heavily impacted by Hurricane Beryl. Damage assessment teams have evaluated some 1,300structures and have provided over 380 clean-up kits to help households kickstart their recovery.

The Red Cross will prioritize helping in communities that are likely to have the most needs or have been identified by our partners or local officials as needing help. Beryl has caused significant damage, and the Red Cross will be with those affected in the weeks and months to come, helping them recover.

Red Cross shelters are open to everyone in need, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability or citizenship status. All disaster assistance is free. We don't require people to show any kind of identification to enter a shelter - just their name and where they were living before the disaster.

If possible, we encourage people who plan to stay in a shelter to bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, other comfort items and important documents. Don't forget to bring any special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, or for family members who have unique needs.

CARIBBEAN RESPONSE Beryl left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Barbados and Jamaica.

Local Red Cross societies are currently leading the response efforts in each country. They are focused on the distribution of relief items and short-term shelter solutions to cover people's immediate needs. Hygiene kits, water treatment kits, cleaning kits, kitchen sets, tarpaulins, blankets and mosquito nets have already been dispatched to the hardest hit islands to meet the immediate needs of the affected communities.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and its global Red Cross partners are also supporting relief efforts. The American Red Cross has deployed international crisis responders to Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica to support of those affected by Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean. These highly trained crisis responders are lending skills such as information management and operations leadership and are supporting on-the-ground relief efforts alongside local Red Cross teams.
