The University of Warwick's Sports and Wellness Hub Unveils £1M Gym Refurbishment

The University of Warwick has announced the completion of a £1M refurbishment of its state-of-the-art gym at the Sports and Wellness Hub.

The new gym will open this Saturday, 31st August.

The comprehensive upgrade, which began in July 2024, has been made possible through a new partnership with Matrix Fitness, one of the world's leading fitness providers.

The investment from Warwick Sport has enabled the integration of the latest and most innovative equipment on the market. The gym has been reconfigured to improve space, allowing for an enhanced workout environment tailored to meet the diverse needs of its users.

Key enhancements include:

  • More Equipment: The gym now features additional cables and pulleys, fixed weight equipment, and more squat racks. Concept2 ergometers, including bikes, rowers, and ski machines, have been introduced, along with dedicated bench presses and a significantly larger free weight area.

  • Improved Space: The gym has been reconfigured to create dedicated zones for different training needs, including functional training, Hyrox, and stretching.

  • Better Environment: The Cycle Studio has been revitalized with new lighting, and the gym has been given a fresh visual identity, creating a more motivational environment for all users.

Mark Hyndman, Director of Sport and Active Lifestyles at Warwick Sport, emphasized the importance of this refurbishment as part of Warwick Sport's broader strategy for active wellness and sport:

"The gym will play a critical role within our new strategy for active wellness. We have made a significant investment to ensure we've got the right environment that provides individuals with access and opportunities to engage in an active lifestyle with us at Warwick Sport.

"Regardless of interest or level of participation, we know how powerful the gym can be in bringing communities together and enabling individuals to reach their true potential, whether that's performing on the international stage, or working out with friends."

Alex Hurst, Sector Specialist - Education at Matrix Fitness, shared his excitement about the partnership:

"Matrix Fitness is proud to partner with the University of Warwick in redeveloping their fitness spaces. Collaborating with their dedicated team to create this world-class facility has been a pleasure.

"Every aspect has been meticulously planned to ensure that all member types and demographics enjoy a top-tier experience, fully supported by the on-site staff.

"The new gym will be a central hub, enhancing student life, supporting BUCS and sports students, and serving as a key community builder. We are delighted to welcome the University of Warwick to our team!"

The refurbishment project was informed by extensive staff and customer feedback on how to maximize the fitness experience at the Sports and Wellness Hub gym.

An independent review conducted by TrackMyGym in November 2023 provided further insights into optimizing equipment usage and gym layout, ensuring that the new facility meets the evolving needs of the University community.
