Public Notice, LAS 35149, Land Use Permit Application for Quartz Lake Firebreak

Subject to AS 38.05.850, the Northern Regional Land Office has received an application for the following:

APPLICANT: Division of Forestry and Fire Protection (DOF)

PROJECT NAME: LAS 35149

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: Approximately four miles north of Big Delta, along the northeastern side of Quartz Lake.

LEGAL DESCRIPTION: Sections 7, 8, 16, 17, 18, 21 of Township 8 South, Range 10 East, Fairbanks Meridian

REQUESTED ACTIVITY: The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Mining, Land & Water (DMLW), Northern Regional Land Office (NRO) has received an application from the Division of Forestry and Fire Protection (DOF) to clear a firebreak around the northeastern side of Quartz Lake to protect residences in the area. The fire break would be a 100-foot-wide, approximately 3.75 mile long, shaded fuel break. Hand crews and some machinery, such as masticators, would be used to clear the fire break. The fire break would be located 50 feet away from the property lines of private property. All slash would be piled for later burning. Most of the firebreak would be located along the east side of an RST 2477 trail, known as Goodpaster River Trail (RST 449).

REQUESTED TERM: 5 years

DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS: August 29, 2024

The public is invited to comment on this activity. The purpose of this notice is to gather input before a decision is made on this activity. To ensure consideration, written comments must be received by the Division of Mining, Land and Water at 3700 Airport Way, Fairbanks, AK 99709 on or before 5:00 p.m. on the date noted above. After review and adjudication, we may issue an authorization with stipulations for the activity. The activity may be modified during the review and adjudication process.
