UNI Gallery of Art announces two upcoming exhibition openings

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art and Permanent Art Collection is excited to announce two new art exhibitions opening at the Gallery this month.

"Home is the Mouth of a Shark," asolo exhibition by Aaron Coleman, is a stunningly colorful amalgam of creative processes and substantial historical research. Coleman's work addresses "how mundane and seemingly anodyne artifacts embody the complex and pervasive history of race/racism and class/classicism in the United States." Coleman will be on campus to visit with advanced printmaking students and give his closing reception lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Kamerick Art Building room 111. The lecture and artist reception is free and open to the public.

"Texts by Design: Works from the UNI Permanent Art Collection and University Special Collections" is located in the Mary Haskell-Hansen Room of the Gallery. This UNI Permanent Art Collection exhibition was curated by UNI Department of Art Professor of Art History and Department Head Elizabeth Sutton and will run from Aug. 26 to Sept. 26, Oct. 10 to Nov. 15, and Dec. 9 to 20. This exhibition includes books from the UNI Permanent Art Collection and University Special Collections. The books range from a 15th-century astrology manual to 20th-century Specimen Sheets from the GramLee Collection of Historic Wood Type, and includes hand-written manuscripts as well as texts printed in various forms.

The UNI Gallery of Art is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment.
