Firefighters Battle Early Morning Fire on N Edwards Ave

Syracuse, NY- On Friday, November 29, 2024, at 5:25 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported structure fire at 383 North Edwards Ave. Firefighters from Station 17 on Burnet Ave arrived at the scene 4 minutes later and found a one-and-a-half-story wood frame single-family residence with fire showing from multiple first-floor and basement windows. The initial company started stretching a hose line and transmitted a signal '99', indicating a working fire.

As teams of firefighters moved hoses to the front door, other teams of firefighters prepared to search the entire building for any remaining occupants. Due to the large amount of fire present in the front of the house, crews initially applied water from the outside. Upon making entry, crews found a large hole in the floor, stopping their ability to advance further into the structure. Interior and exterior crews noted the basement was fully involved in fire. Crews were called out of the structure. The Squad Company was forced off the roof by fire conditions as they completed their vertical vent hole. The sole occupant of the residence had evacuated before the arrival of the Fire Department. Multiple hose lines and the elevated waterway of Ladder 4 were used to extinguish the fire. Most of the fire was extinguished after approximately 60 minutes. The remaining hot spots were extinguished, and the fire was declared out approximately 80 minutes after being dispatched. Crews remained at the scene for over three hours, clearing smoke from the building, cleaning up, and assisting investigators.

The residence involved is an occupied single-family residence. The structure suffered fire, smoke, and water damage throughout. One occupant was displaced by this fire; the Red Cross is assisting them. Syracuse Fire Investigators have determined that the fire started in the basement. The cause is still under investigation. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.

A total of 38 Fire Department Personnel, including command and support staff, responded to this incident. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
