Oracle Base Database Service Adds AMD VM Standard E5 Flex Shapes

Flexible Provisioning of Compute Resources

We are pleased to announce the general availability of AMD E5 flexible shapes, VM.Standard.E5.Flex, for Oracle Base Database Service, providing you the next generation of AMD shapes for your Oracle Database workloads. Base Database Service offers virtual machines as single-node DB systems or 2-node DB systems running Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).

VM.Standard.E5.Flex shapes are based on 4th Generation AMD EPYCTM Processors, allowing you to provision any number of OCPUs starting with 1 OCPU up to a maximum of 64 OCPUs. Each OCPU includes 16 GB of memory so you can increase the memory available in a single VM to 1 TB by adding more OCPUs. The network-attached block storage can scale up to 80 TB of data capacity on either balanced or higher performance storage, providing up to 640K IOPS per VM. Each OCPU also includes 1 Gbps of network bandwidth with the total amount of network bandwidth reaching 40 Gbps for a VM with 40 or more OCPUs. This provides you the ability to size the VM to meet your database workload requirements while utilizing cloud economics and pay only for the resources needed to support your applications.

When high availability of applications is critical, Base Database Service offers a 2-node Oracle RAC database configuration that can be used for rolling maintenance updates or application failover in the case of unplanned downtime. It provides a total of up to 128 OCPUs and 2TB of memory across both VMs.

Develop Applications with Oracle Database 23ai

Base Database Service supports Oracle Database Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition 19c, 21c, and 23ai. Oracle Database 23ai enables developers to add AI functionality to data-driven applications more easily and incorporate GenAI capabilities so that all users of Oracle Database, from data analysts to developers and DBAs, can be more productive. Included are new features such as AI Vector Search, a powerful new technology that enables you to leverage a new generation of AI models to generate and store vectors.

Oracle Database 23ai also extends Oracle's converged database approach with JSON Relational Duality and Operational Property Graph. These enhancements enable developers to use simple JSON document and graph APIs to access data yet store the data in a more efficient relational structure. With Oracle Database 23ai developers can more easily create new innovative applications that take your business to the next level.

Distributed Databases now Provide RAFT Replication

Distributed databases are gaining increasing popularity and significance due to their capacity to manage large and intricate datasets, in addition to their scalability, flexibility, and compatibility with modern cloud application designs and architectures.

Base Database Service supports Oracle Globally Distributed Database with RAFT Replication, allowing customers to meet data compliance and residency requirements by running globally distributed workloads and locating data only where it's needed. RAFT Replication provides capabilities to create replicated data chunks and swift failover to an active shard, in addition to Globally Distributed Database providing built-in fault tolerance to achieve high-availability of your data. For more information, refer to MOS note: Deploying Distributed Database with Raft Replication on Oracle Base Database Service (Doc ID 3031656.1)

SQL Cache for Oracle Database

Base Database Service also supports Oracle True Cache, an in-memory, consistent, and automatically managed SQL cache for Oracle Database 23ai. It operates seamlessly within your database environment, efficiently storing frequently accessed data to dramatically improve application response times. By shouldering the load of repetitive data requests, Oracle True Cache effectively reduces strain on the database server.

With True Cache's ability to optimize latency, streamline operations, and improve performance, it enables you to meet the ever-increasing demands of database workloads. For more information, refer to MOS note: True Cache Installation & Configuration On Database Base System (Doc ID 3031433.1)

Summary

Oracle Base Database Service supports both Oracle Database Enterprise and Standard Edition on the latest generation flexible AMD, Intel, and Ampere shapes. New capabilities are continuously released including the recent support of Oracle Database 23ai for Oracle Base Database Service. With Oracle Database 23ai you can more easily develop new applications with JSON relational duality and operational property graph. You can also deploy Globally Distributed Database and improve application response times with True Cache.
