Mayor Bibb Announces Permanency of Public Safety Chief Director Dornat A. Drummond

Drummond's appointment follows 35 years of commendable service in the City of Cleveland

Tuesday, July 2, 2024 - Cleveland - Today, Mayor Justin M. Bibb announced the permanent appointment of Dornat "Wayne" A. Drummond as Cleveland's Chief Director of Public Safety. Drummond was sworn in to the permanent position yesterday afternoon.

"Chief Director Drummond is an incomparable and well-respected leader with deep institutional knowledge and a strong commitment to keeping this city safe," said Mayor Bibb. "As the interim director he has been a trusted advisor to me and a fair, transparent, and forward-thinking leader of his department. It is for these reasons that I named him Chief of Police back in 2022 and, once again, I unquestionably believe that he is the best person to serve as our next safety director."

Chief Director Drummond has been a public servant in the City of Cleveland Division of Police for over 35 years and has a strong understanding of the challenges, opportunities and needs of the community. As Interim Safety Director, he has overseen the Divisions of Police, Fire, Emergency Management Services, and Animal Care and Control, making long-lasting improvements through relationships and rapport with the community.

"Modernizing operations, making data-driven investments, and forging influential partnerships has been - and will continue to be - a priority for me," said Drummond. "While an arduous rebuilding journey is ahead of us, I am looking forward to continuing Mayor Bibb's commitment to public safety, and making a positive impact in our divisions, with city stakeholders, and most importantly, in our diverse communities."

During his time in the Department of Public Safety, Director Drummond has been instrumental in the development and execution of the Summer Safety Plan, a data-driven operation combatting violent crime in the City of Cleveland. He also welcomed the largest Police Academy Class in recent years and has been instrumental in all aspects of Mayor Bibb's RISE Initiative. Drummond is widely known as a caring and compassionate leader who spends time in the community, working directly with residents to proactively promote safety.

Chief Director Drummond is a graduate of the University of Toledo and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree. He is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Class 230. He was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica and grew up in the City of Cleveland in the Cedar Avenue neighborhood. Chief Drummond has been married to his wife, Trish, for 29 years. They have four children and five grandchildren.
