techUK welcomed today the NHS Genomic Medicine Service to deliver a briefing on the current core projects (e.g. the Digital Genomic Test Service, formerly known as the test directory).
The programme aims to transform how genomic data is handled to ultimately impact patient outcomes. Its fundamental principles include enabling secure and rapid access to genomic data for patient care, facilitating family linkages in genomic records, supporting research and innovation, and establishing a centralised access point with standardised processes.
A significant challenge facing the program is system integration, particularly with Electronic Patient Records (EPR). The goal is to move beyond simple tactical integrations toward native interoperability. During the discussion, attendees proposed several strategies to achieve this, including clear API development, leveraging hospital leadership influence with vendors, and implementing strong data standards; with a consensus that success would require both incentives ("carrot") and regulatory requirements ("stick") to encourage vendor adoption.
Looking ahead, the programme is expanding its scope to include bioinformatics and structured reporting capabilities. A national legal framework is in development, and there are plans for an international conference to build consensus on standards. The upcoming NHS data and digital bill, expected mid-next year, is anticipated to provide additional regulatory support for these initiatives.
The program represents a crucial shift in healthcare digitalisation, moving from planning and discovery phases into active implementation, with a clear focus on creating standardised, integrated systems that can serve both immediate patient care needs and future research requirements.
