HACLA Celebrates Grand Opening of Project Homekey Property Canoga Park Place Apartments

Los Angeles- On Monday, August 12, 2024, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) and LA Family Housing were joined by Councilmember Bob Blumenfield and representatives from Senator Caroline Menjivar and Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel's offices to celebrate the grand opening of a motel conversion that will offer 50 units of permanent supportive housing and supportive services in Canoga Park. Canoga Park Place Apartments, located at 7631 Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Canoga Park, is a unique and successful example of State and Local efforts to expedite and deliver permanent housing solutions for Angelenos who are homeless or at risk of homelessness using critical funding from the State of California's Project Homekey grants, Community Development Block Grants and Project-based Vouchers through HACLA and the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Canoga Park Place Apartments represents a unique architectural transformation of a 1950's era motel into a beautiful permanent housing community.

"HACLA was pleased to answer the call from the State of California to implement creative housing solutions that expedite the delivery of deeply affordable housing," said Jenny Scanlin, Chief Strategic Development Officer. "We could not have done this without funding from the State of California, creative and swift permit processing from City of Los Angeles, and the partnership of our co-owner, LA Family Housing."

"We continue to lock arms with our state and local partners to bring unhoused Angelenos indoors and to develop more permanent housing with supportive services to Angelenos experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless," said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. "With the recent 2024 Homeless Point-In-Time-Count showing the number of people who moved into permanent housing at an all time high, we must continue this momentum. Thanks to Councilmember Blumenfield and the many partners that made this project possible. Now, more people will have an affordable place to call home."

"Canoga Park Place is a wonderful example of how strong multi-jurisdictional partnerships can leverage existing buildings to grow our housing capacity and get people off the streets," said Councilmember Bob Blumenfield. "We need to keep bringing every solution to the table and I'm grateful to all our partners who helped make this project a reality."
