ATLANTA - House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) was nominated today by his colleagues in the House Republican Caucus to serve his second legislative term as Speaker of the Georgia House for the 2025-2026 legislative session.
"It has been an immense honor and privilege to serve as Georgia's 75th Speaker of the House, and I am deeply grateful for the unwavering trust and support of my colleagues and friends," said Speaker Jon Burns. "As we reflect on all that we've achieved together, I'm more confident than ever that our caucus will continue to deliver meaningful results-whether it's passing historic tax cuts, investing in education, expanding access to healthcare or making our communities safer. I look forward to the continued work ahead as we strive to grow and strengthen our Republican majority."
The Speaker of the House is chosen by the members of the House of Representatives on the first day of each biennial legislative session. The House will officially elect its Speaker when it convenes for the start of the 2025-2026 session on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives serves as the presiding officer of the legislative body and its chief administrative leader. The Speaker is responsible for establishing the leadership and membership of House committees, presiding over floor sessions, enforcing House rules, assigning bills to committees and bringing matters to the House floor for debate.
Representative Jon Burns represents the citizens of District 159, which includes Screven County and portions of Bulloch and Effingham counties. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2004 and is the 75th Speaker of the House.
