Fact-Checking Criticism Against The New York Times

In Oct. 10 remarks at the Detroit Economic Club, former President Trump disputed a fact from a recent New York Times article regarding an award he long-claimed to have won but never did, calling it "wrong" and The Times "disgraceful" for publishing it.Our reporter, Peter Baker, who helped write the original piece, continued reporting on Trump's false Oct. 10 remarks in a follow-up, which Vanity Fair and others similarly fact-checked. The local Oakland Press reporting that Trump himself cited in the speech even included an editor's note stating that Mr. Trump in fact did not receive the long-ago award that he had claimed receiving.

The New York Times publishes fact-based independent journalism to inform audiences and broaden understanding of a complex world, including the presidential campaign.
