Pedro Sánchez has held a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, in view of the alarming escalation in the region and the difficult situation his country is facing.

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has reiterated to Prime Minister Mikati the full commitment of his government to avoid a regional war that will only aggravate the spiral of violence and the bloodshed of innocent civilians. He also expressed his solidarity with him for the difficult time the country is going through, recalling that Lebanon is a sovereign state whose territorial integrity must be respected.

Spain calls for the need to ensure compliance with international law and international humanitarian law also in relation to Lebanon. Coherence must continue to guide external action.

In this regard, he again called for a ceasefire in Gaza, Lebanon and the whole region, and for restraint on the part of all actors involved to avoid further escalation of the conflict.

The two leaders discussed Spain's increase in humanitarian aid to the Lebanese population, with a new humanitarian aid package worth €350 billion to send medicines and support WHO emergency medical teams.

They also discussed the situation of all UNIFIL personnel deployed in the country, including a contingent of 650 Spaniards. The president recalled that the security of troops under the UN peacekeeping flag is paramount.

Yesterday, the president also spoke by telephone with the Secretary-General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, with whom he discussed the worrying situation in the Middle East and the need for the international community to press for an end to this spiral of violence and for respect for international law and international humanitarian law.
