Media Advisory: Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks the Launch of 500 kW Solar Energy Project at NCDAC Tabor Correctional Institution

TABOR CITY
Oct 28, 2024

WHAT: The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) will celebrate a significant milestone toward achieving state sustainability goals with a groundbreaking ceremony for a 500 kW solar energy project on Oct. 30. The new 500 kW solar array at Tabor Correctional Institution is one of several major energy improvement efforts underway at NCDAC correctional facilities aimed at achieving goals set forth by Governor Cooper's Executive Order 80.

This will be the first utility-owned solar farm in North Carolina to serve a public correctional institution. The siting, design and construction of the solar facility at Tabor Correctional Institution is made possible by public-private partnerships, including NCDAC, the local electric utility Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC), Schneider Electric and other key stakeholders.

In addition to the Tabor Correctional solar installation, NCDAC and Schneider Electric are working together to improve energy efficiency at six correctional facilities through a Guaranteed Energy Savings Performance Contract. This $38.7 million performance contract will implement innovative energy efficiency equipment and other measures, returning more than $60 million in guaranteed savings over the next 20 years.

This is the largest energy efficiency effort in North Carolina government history and is one of the most significant in terms of solar energy.

WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024, 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Tabor Correctional Institution, 4600 Swamp Fox Highway West, Tabor City, NC 28463

AGENDA: A short program will feature project leaders and honored guests, including:

  • Todd Ishee, Secretary, NC Department of Adult Correction
  • Jamie Bullard, Warden, Tabor Correctional Institution
  • Graham Lewis, Program Manager, Schneider Electric
