City of Denton Avoids Stage Two Drought Measures Thanks to Community Conservation Efforts

DENTON, TX, Aug. 16, 2024 - Today, the City of Denton is pleased to announce that, due to the collective efforts of our residents and businesses, we have successfully avoided entering Stage 2 of drought measures. This positive outcome results from not exceeding the high demand threshold of 38 million gallons of water for a third consecutive day.

With the challenging water conditions this season, the City strongly encourages the community to continue responsible water conservation practices as much as possible during this period. Key conservation measures include adhering to the required lawn irrigation schedule, fixing leaks promptly, and adopting water-efficient practices.

Our current situation arises from unexpected but necessary repairs on two damaged filters at our Lake Lewisville treatment facility, which have temporarily reduced our treatment capacity. Anticipated repairs are scheduled to begin next week and will consist of the following:

Timeline for Filter Repairs:

  • Aug. 20: A contractor will be on-site to begin repairs on one filter. We anticipate that the repair will be completed by the end of August, at which point plant capacity will be restored.
  • Simultaneous Work: During this time, the contractor will also remove the second filter and inspect the underdrains. Repairs on the second filter are anticipated to be completed by the end of September.
  • Expected Completion: Capacity will be restored by Aug. 30.

As a reminder, the City of Denton has implemented a twice-a-week irrigation watering schedule. Following the mandatory schedule and ensuring that your automatic irrigation timers and sprinkler alignments are correctly set are among the most effective ways to conserve water. Your conservation efforts can help prevent further water use restrictions.
