Tanzania strengthens Energy Efficiency with Energy Management and Audit Training to key Institutions

Today, the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), in partnership with the Institute of Energy Professionals Africa (IEPA), launched a comprehensive training program in Certified Energy Managers (CEM) and Certified Energy Auditors (CEA).

The intensive six-week program will equip 132 individuals from both public and private institutions with knowledge and skills necessary to drive energy efficiency across various sectors. Through the combination of classroom learning and practical experience, participants will gain expertise in conducting energy audits, implementing sustainable practises, and fostering a culture of energy management.

"We are proud to be at the forefront of advancing energy efficiency skills in Tanzania. The CEM and CEA training programs are pivotal in building a cadre of professionals equipped with the skills and knowledge to drive sustainable energy practices," said Prof. Ezekiel M. Amri, Deputy Rector (Academic, Research & Consultancy) of DIT "This training will contribute significantly to the country's energy sector and its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions."

This training program is part of the broader Energy Efficiency Action Plan, coordinated by the Ministry of Energy (MoE) and implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with funding from the European Union (EU) and the Embassy of Ireland.

"A main goal of the Energy Efficiency Action Plan is to develop professional skills in Energy Management and Energy Audits," emphasizedWeyinmi Omamuli, Senior Economic Advisor at UNDP Tanzania. "By equipping individuals with the expertise to conduct thorough energy assessments, we are fostering a culture of sustainability and efficiency that will benefit both the economy and the environment."

Eng. Styden Rwebangila, Assistant Commissioner for Energy Development at the Ministry of Energy , echoed the importance of developing domestic capacity in energy auditing and management. "The 132 trained energy experts have the potential to revolutionise Tanzania's energy sector," he stated. "These newly trained professionals can support businesses in conducting efficient audits, leading to cost savings, increased productivity, reduced carbon emissions, and the creation of green jobs. We encourage them to use their new skills for the betterment of the country's development.,"

EU Delegation to Tanzania, represented by Mr. Lamine Diallo, the Head of Natural Resources reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Energy Efficiency Action Plan. "The training program will empower Tanzanians with the skills needed to drive innovation and implement effective energy solutions," he noted. "Ultimately, it will contribute to a more resilient, secure, and economically viable energy sector for Tanzania."

Correspondingly, the Embassy of Ireland to Tanzania, represented by Ms. Mags Gaynor, Deputy Head of Mission, highlighted the significance of this training to advancing climate actions for sustainable and inclusive development, which is a priority for Ireland and Tanzania. "This capacity-building initiative fosters sustainable energy practices at individual and organizational levels, both public and private institutions. It contributes to Tanzania's national objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening climate resilience, and promoting economic growth especially for women and youth through improved energy access and efficiency", she said.
