The Bakersfield College Theater Department has wrapped another successful summer production, with the final performance of 'Something Rotten' taking place over the weekend. The entertaining, musical comedy presents the story of the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, who struggle to reach the success they long for in the theatrical world as they compete with the renowned Renaissance writer, William Shakespeare.

With fame and fortune always just out of reach, the eldest Bottom brother hopelessly turns to a local soothsayer for the secrets and innovative ideas lurking within Shakespeare's mind. Longing for a better life, Nick realizes that he must dive headfirst into the future of theater: musicals - at the suggestion of the next-generation, eccentric soothsayer. However, as Nick and Nigel set out to write the world's very first musical, through trial and error, they quickly discover that nothing comes for free and true success lies from within.

The BC Theater Department put together a delightful interpretation of 'Something Rotten' with the cast of the hilarious musical expertly delivering comedic timing and heartfelt dialogue while progressing through a variety of rousing song and dance numbers. The captivating story combined the troubles of Renaissance times with hidden twists of modern-day references for a unique tale of two brothers eager to reach the top in a world where Shakespeare is considered the rockstar of lovesick poets.

The summer musical took place inside the Edward Simonsen Indoor Theatre on the Bakersfield College campus, providing the perfect environment to sit back and enjoy the wonders of theater. BC's Performing Arts students had their talents on full display with intricate musical numbers and impressive vocal performances presented to an overflowing audience that responded with booming laughter and appraisal. The collaboration of the theater, choral, and instrumental music programs brought together a unique blend of talent to create a memorable night for all those in attendance.
